The birth of a new tradition........? | The birth of a new tradition........? |

Our new extended Summer Meeting was this year extended to Effingham GC in Surrey, who greeted the Society with a course in excellent condition and a day free from rain.
As tradition has it, this is the competition during the year where we invite guests. We had 11 in total, from The Swedish Chamber of Commerce and member guests. In all we were 39 people for dinner. Great crowd!
The players were also in excellent condition. More than 50% of all players scored 30p or more!!! When did that last happen? I can remember competitions where 100% of all players scored less than 30p! The former was due to a course in fantastic condition and the enthusiasm of the players to come to this well known course for a game. All classes were won by a narrow margin and there were several count backs when calculating the results. With perfect timing, the sun broke out just as the first flight came back to the club house for well deserved drinks on the terrace in the sunshine.
What about the results then? Well, for the full list, please go to Summer Meeting on the front page yellow Result table. Worth mentioning here are the people who came 2nd. We normally don’t care about them, but here and today, let’s pay them a tribute.
In the Ladies competition, Dampokalen, Cecilia Block played an excellent round of 36 points and was beaten by a single stroke. The men’s competition, Midsummer Trophy, saw Cecilia’s partner Douglas Nurse win the family prestige price, scoring 38 points, but that was still not enough to win. There was somebody who scored 1 better… Last years winner, Ian Butcher scored 31 points and was also he beaten by a shot. So for all the winners, please go the Summer Meeting results.
With these results, it was no surprise to see all happy faces coming for a drink before the dinner. This must be the best dining room of the year! It just oozed of tradition from a more than 100 year old golf club. The food couldn’t go wrong: Traditional Matjesill and Snaps and Beef Wellington with plenty of South African wine. This year we had Philips Bandspelare, playing the music and most kept on swinging on the dance floor for many hours. Listening to the many members summarising the day, this could very well be the beginning of a new tradition. We seem to have liked everything about Effingham…
The committee would finally like to take this opportunity and thank Anne and Bengt-Arne Magnuson for the lovely Blue and Yellow flower decorations, the midsummer pole and PSF, (Proud Swedish Flag), and most important of all: for donating all the Matjesill! Much appreciated.
And of course, let’s congratulate Christina Andersson – 37p, Ulf Brasen – 39p and Folmer Amtoft -32p for their superior victories among a very competitive field. Well played.
